Thanks for taking the time to start a discussion about this — it probably affects more people than we think. GitLab.com asking for so much personal info is the main reason why I started Silex Desktop, and the NLnet Foundation even decided to fund it!
Two ways in, today:
- Silex Desktop — runs on your machine, no account at all. It's an early alpha, so expect bugs and missing features (publishing, for one), but I'm working on it full time now, so it gets better every month: https://www.silex.me/download/
- JiHuLab — good news: it's GitLab, so our connector already works with it. The instance isn't hardcoded, it's a config value: run Silex yourself, point it at jihulab.com, and you're the owner of the official Chinese Silex instance!! Run it for other Chinese users too, not just yourself. Tell me if you can and want to do that, I'll send you the exact config and the instructions, and we'd point people to it from Silex website
One question that decides a lot: can you reach v3.silex.me from where you are at all? If yes, adding JiHuLab to our own login screen is worth doing too. If not, an instance in China is the only thing that would really work
